The Hog Island Lighthouse Fresnel Lens from Virginia's Eastern Shore has a new home on the Portsmouth waterfront. It's the second largest Fresnel lens in the United States.

Shooting an out-of-town wedding today (shot a golf tournament two days ago), so it will be a day or two before I can get back to commenting.

The 94-year-old Portsmouth Lightship is dry-docked in Olde Towne Portsmouth in an unlikely spot -- sandwiched between the swanky Marriott Renaissance Hotel and some non-descript 1970's waterfront condos! At least she's been saved from the wrecking ball. We went aboard last weekend and were fascinated to learn that the mast is hollow, allowing extremely skinny crewmen to access the light for maintenance. :-)

Norfolk's downtown skyline as seen across the Elizabeth River from Old Towne Portsmouth. Taken last weekend on a glorious day, although the wind was so strong it bent the flag pole!

A portion of the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, as seen at night from our hotel room last weekend. The reflections caught my eye.

Ocean Bling

The ocean was glittering like diamonds in the morning sun that day... Check out the star patterns in the curl of the back wave. Loved how it looked!

View at a larger size for more sparkle!

Thank you for continuing to comment on my photos when my lack of time prevents me from doing so on yours... Next week watch out, as I'll be back to commenting at full speed ahead!

Girls' Day Out at the Beach

Saw this colorful group of friends last week at Sandbridge Beach enjoying the sunshine, sand, and surf.

Thank you for all the positive comments on yesterday's photo of the Boardwalk Art Show! What a nice surprise! This week is packed with appointments; plus, I have a golf tournament and a wedding to shoot this weekend! Next week I'll be able to sit quietly at the computer and finally look at YOUR photos. :-)

The 54th Annual Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show, as seen early Friday morning from our 9th floor hotel room, located 5 blocks south of its origination point at 17th Street. I had to lean far over the balcony railing and zoom way out to get this shot. The amusement park in the foreground is a permanent fixture; a bike path separates the hotels, shops, and restaurants from the 3-mile, 40-block boardwalk.

The weather was typical for Virginia during the summer -- hazy, hot, and humid (also known as the 3 Hs) -- so that's why the beach in the background appears fuzzy.

I'm contemplating applying for next year's show.... :-)

I was lucky to capture a few shots of this lovely ocean rainbow before it disappeared entirely. Not as spectacular as John's but it's my first one! It's fascinating how the sky to the right of the rainbow is darker than the left, something that's not visible to the naked eye.

Extreme Home Makeover Sand Castle Edition. :-)

Not as sharp as I would have liked, due to distance from the subject. Even so, it was fun watching this little girl derive such joy from demolishing her father and siblings' masterpiece, which they created earlier in the afternoon!

Still unable to go outdoors due to a serious sunburn, I took this yesterday morning by placing the camera almost on the floor of our beach house living room and pointing it out the sliding doors toward the ocean. I liked the effect of the "double sunrise" -- the literal one as well as the deck sunburst! Look closely and you'll see a lady walking her dog along the water's edge. I had no idea they were in the photo until I uploaded it to the computer!

Another shot from Monday morning's sunrise over the Atlantic. Later that day I spent about 4 hours on the beach and despite using SPF Vampire (a friend's nickname!), I wound up with the worst sunburn I've had since I was a teenager more than 32 years ago! So no pictures for me today as I can barely move around. Aloe vera has become my new best friend...

Shimmering Waters

If she were still alive, my grandmother would have been 97 today. She loved the ocean as much as I do and so this shot, taken early yesterday morning from our beach house overlooking the Atlantic, is dedicated to her memory.

Best seen at a larger size.

Thank you SO very much for the comments on yesterday's giant red beach ball picture. I plan to return the favor as soon as I'm settled back in Richmond next week. :-)

The World's Largest Beach Ball

The irony of this photo is how the children seem oblivious to the fun going on around them, perhaps because they're so engrossed in their sand castle building. :-)

The master bedroom view from our oceanfront beach house in Sandbridge, Virginia. Although I took this photo nearly 3 weeks ago when I first came down here for some much-needed rest & relaxation, I'm posting it today, since I'm heading back to Richmond later this afternoon. Am trying to hold on to the memory of this view, as it may be the last time I get to see it -- we've put the house up for sale. :-( It's quite literally breaking my heart...

UPDATE: Am staying on for another week -- YAY!!! -- mainly because I can't bear to leave. (insert whiny voice here) ;-) Will resume commenting on your photos when I get back.

Found this unusual shell on the beach late yesterday afternoon (between torrential downpours) which reminded me of cigarettes all lined up in a row. Best seen at a larger size for textural detail.
